Meek opposes Arizona immigration law

Senate candidate and former Florida trooper Kendrick Meek opposed the controversial new Arizona immigration law on Monday, calling it “neither fair nor practical.”

“It encourages police to question people who have done nothing wrong, and it does a disservice to people in this country who are employed, paying their taxes and are good citizens of their communities,” said Meek, a Democratic congressman from Miami.

Meek, who once served on the Florida Highway Patrol, said such a law will hamper attempts by police to find witnesses willing to speak about crimes.

The Arizona law requires local police to question those suspected of violating federal immigration laws, and it requires legal immigrants to carry identification.

President Obama has called the Arizona law “misguided.” Individual groups plan to challenge the constitutionality of the law before it takes effect.
