Why we like him: Keith Ellison is a model Progressive who represents our core concepts and beliefs. In particular, we like his outspoken support of the public option and his efforts to ensure that those in poverty are not taken advantage of and marginalized.

Candidate Quote: "No one should be cut out of the American dream: not immigrants, not people with disabilities, not gays, not poor people, not even a Muslim committed to serving his nation."

Congressman Ellison was born into a high-achieving family in Detroit that had taken a prominent role in the Civil Rights Movement. Accordingly, he stayed close to home and attended Wayne State University. After graduating with a B.A. in economics, he married his high school sweetheart and moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota Law School.

After graduating with a degree of Juris Doctor, he then worked as a litigator specializing in civil rights, employment, and criminal defense law. Following that, Ellison became executive director of the nonprofit Legal Rights Center in Minneapolis, an organization that specialized in the defense of indigent clients.
